Dentistry FAQs

Prevention is the foundation of a healthy smile. Here are quick answers to common parent questions—so you can feel prepared and confident.

Yes! We are always excited to welcome new happy little smiles to our practice.

Whether it’s your child’s very first dental visit or you’re looking for a more gentle, kid-centered experience, we’d love to meet your family. Our team is trained specifically in pediatric dentistry, so everything we do is designed to help kids feel safe, confident, and even excited about the dentist.

Ready to schedule? Reach out—we can’t wait to meet you!

Absolutely.

We believe you’re an important part of your child’s comfort and confidence. We also gently encourage growing independence when it feels right—sometimes kids surprise everyone with how confident they feel on their own! If we suggest a few minutes of solo time, it’s only when we think it will help your child focus and build trust with our team—and we’ll always talk with you first.

No pressure, no surprises—just teamwork.

Yes- when it is truly needed. Our goal is always to use the least amount of intervention possible. Many children do wonderfully with patience, clear explanations, and a calm, supportive environment.

If your child feels especially anxious or needs more extensive treatment, we do offer sedation options right here in our office. We’ll walk you through every step, explain the risks and benefits, and make a decision together that feels right for your family.

YES! As a pediatric specialty office, we’re happy to see patients with most any type of insurance plan. We are not contracted with any specific insurance companies, which means we’re considered out-of-network. For many families, that still means great coverage—and our team will help you understand your benefits before treatment so there are no surprises. We’ll submit claims on your behalf and do everything we can to make the process simple and stress-free. If you have questions about coverage or estimates, just ask— we’re here to help.

Yes—for basic services, absolutely.

If you’re looking for pricing on things like a new patient exam, cleaning, or routine x-rays, our team is happy to provide that over the phone. Transparency matters to us.

If you need a quote for specific treatment, we’ll first need to see your child so Dr. Caroline Derrow can complete a thorough exam and make an accurate diagnosis. Every child (and every smile) is different, and we want to give you a treatment plan that’s thoughtful, personalized, and truly necessary—not a guess.

Yes, we do.

We partner with Cherry to offer flexible payment options. This allows many families to break treatment costs into smaller, more manageable monthly payments—instead of paying everything at once.

You can find more details about Cherry on our website, or our team is always happy to walk you through how it works.

Very safe.

We use modern digital xrays, which emit significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays. In fact, our x-rays have about the same amount of radiation as playing outside during a 15 minute recess!

They are only taken when clinically necessary to help us catch things we can’t see with the naked eye—like cavities between teeth or concerns under the gums. Your child’s safety is always our top priority, and we follow strict guidelines to keep exposure as low as possible.

It depends on their cavity risk—for most kids, fluoride application is recommended every 6 months at their regular checkup.

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. If your child is at higher risk for cavities, we may recommend more frequent applications. We’ll always explain why and make the decision together.

Until they can do a really thorough job on their own. For some kids, that is 7 or 8 years old. For others, it is well into middle school.

A good rule of thumb—if your child can’t tie their own shoes well, or write a paragraph neatly, they probably need help brushing too. Even once they start brushing independently, we recommend supervising and doing a “final check” to make sure all the surfaces are clean.

Aim for 2 minutes, twice a day.

Most children stay with a pediatric dentist through their teen years, typically until they are ready to graduate high school. Dr. Caroline Derrow specializes in caring for growing smiles, from baby teeth through adolescence. When the time comes to transition to a general dentist, we’ll help guide that process so it feels smooth and stress-free.
