Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Sometimes the best treatment is the one that protects your child with the least stress. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) offers a conservative option that can slow—or even stop—cavities. As a result, it often buys time until your child is older, more cooperative, or ready for a different type of restoration.

Tiny Drops for Big Cavity Protection

SDF is a liquid medication that we carefully apply directly to a cavity to stop decay from progressing. Because the process is quick and non-invasive, it often works well for young children, anxious kids, or situations where we want to avoid more involved treatment. Before we move forward, we clearly explain why SDF may—or may not—be the right fit and what you can expect. That way, you can make a confident decision.

SDF Treatment
Starts With Us

The appointment is typically fast and comfortable. In many cases, we can add SDF to a routine visit. However, if we discover a cavity unexpectedly, we may recommend a short, focused appointment instead.

What to expect during SDF treatment:

  • We evaluate the tooth and confirm SDF is appropriate
  • The tooth is dried and isolated
  • A small amount of SDF is applied to the cavity
  • The area is allowed to absorb briefly
  • We review next steps and follow-up timing

Benefits of SDF

Why Parents Like Conservative Options

While SDF does not replace every restorative treatment, it can be a valuable tool. In many situations, it allows us to keep care simple and reduce stress.

Helps Stop Cavities From Spreading

Most importantly, SDF can arrest the progression of a cavity. By stopping decay early, we may reduce the risk of pain or infection.

Quick and Minimally Invasive

No drilling and no numbing in many cases—making it a helpful option for little ones or anxious children.

Buys Time for the Right Next Step

Additionally, SDF can help us delay more involved treatment until your child is older—or until the timing feels right for a filling or crown.

Important Note

SDF Can Darken
the Cavity Area

However, there is one important thing parents should understand. SDF typically turns the treated area dark—often black. Although this color change signals that the cavity has responded to treatment, it can be noticeable, especially on front teeth.

We’ll discuss:

  • Whether SDF is being used on a visible tooth
  • Options to improve appearance if needed
  • Whether a filling or crown may be recommended later

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Silver Diamine
Fluoride FAQs

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a conservative treatment that can help slow or stop cavities in children. Here are answers to common questions parents often ask.

SDF application is typically quick and comfortable. Some children may notice a mild taste, but it usually isn’t painful.

Sometimes SDF can successfully arrest a cavity long-term, but often it’s part of a plan—especially if the tooth may later need a filling or crown. We’ll explain what’s most likely for your child.

We’ll monitor the treated area at follow-up visits. Arrested cavities often become harder and more stable. If we see changes or symptoms, we’ll discuss next steps.

A Low-Stress Option
When Kids Need It Most

If your child is very young, anxious, or not ready for more involved treatment, SDF may offer a gentle way to protect the tooth. Meanwhile, we can monitor the area and plan the best long-term solution together.

We’ll help you understand:

  • Whether your child is a good candidate
  • What the stain will look like and where it will show
  • When we might recommend a filling or crown later
  • How we’ll monitor progress at future visits
